很久很久以前，斑馬的身上並沒有條紋，牠們的全身都是雪白的。有一天，一隻叫做可可的小斑馬又被朋友欺負了，牠非常的傷心。在回家的路上，牠看到一隻老虎威風凜凜的走在小路上，大家都怕牠。可可靈機一動，回家後，就用黑色的顏料在身上畫上一些條紋，牠告訴母親：「我的朋友們會像怕老虎般的怕我。」
當可可去和朋友們會合時，牠們也紛紛向牠表示，牠們也想在身上畫上條紋。從此以後，所有的斑馬就像我們在動物園裡看到的一樣，身上都有像老虎般的條紋。
A long, long time ago, zebras didn't have stripes on their backs. They were completely white. One day, a small zebra named Koko, was again bullied by his friends. He was very sad. On the way home, he saw a tiger walking proudly down the path. Everyone was afraid of him. This inspired Koko to try something himself. When he arrived home, he painted black stripes on his back. "My friends will be afraid of me just as afraid of the tiger," he told his mother.
When Koko joined his friends, they admired the stripes on his back. They said they wanted to draw black stripes on themselves, too. So, from then on zebras had stripes on them, just as the ones we see in the zoo today.
